MWGO Hosts First Trivia Night

MWGO hosted the first of what will hopefully be many Trivia Nights on Monday Mar 25 at Mast Landing Brewing in Freeport.  By all accounts, the event was a huge success and we hope to have many more like it around the state and throughout the year. We had 14 teams comprising approximately 70 participants and the competition was fierce and friendly!

A huge thank you goes out to our Trivia Master Paul Styslinger for putting together and emceeing the trivia night and to Mast Landing for offering their space for the event. Our roughly 70 participants was reportedly more than Mast Landing has for their own Trivia Nights, so thank you to everyone who attended.

There were five rounds of themed questions including state facts, landmarks, identifications, history, guide laws, riddles, and even map and compass knowledge. The question that the most teams answered correctly dealt with the minimum age for a fishing license, to operate an ATV unaccompanied, and to operate a personal watercraft (it’s 16, by the way) and the funniest answer of the evening was probably “We’re sorry! We don’t know, we’re from Maryland :(” Although some of us are kicking ourselves for not getting this one, the question that the least number of teams answered correctly was “During a tidal shift, the greatest change in sea level occurs in the middle portion of the rise or fall of the tide. The numbers 1:2:3:3:2:1, in that order, are part of a common rule of thumb used to estimate sea level at specific times of day, known as the Rule of what?” Do you know the answer?

In the end, “Not Maine Guides” won the evening with 49 points, followed by “kayak spelled backwards” with 46 points, and “Up the Creek” with 44 points. Another thank you to the 14 teams and roughly 70 participants who showed up for our first Trivia Night.

MWGO hopes to host several of these Trivia Night events around the state and throughout the year. Paul has setup the event and a bank of questions in such a way that others can use his work to host an event with the lion’s share of the work already completed. If you would like to host or help host a Trivia Night in your neck of the woods, please reach out to info@mwgo.org!
