Sea Kayaking and Rescue Clinic
The 1st MWGO Sea Kayaking and Rescue Clinic, hosted and instructed by Portland Paddle will be held Sunday, July 26, at Portland’s East End Beach! This will be begin at 10:30 am and run for approximately 4 hours. It will include on water and on-beach discussions.
Who is this for? Any MWGO member who wishes a to learn and practice kayak skills. This can include recreation guides who wish to learn more about sea kayaking and sea kayak guides who seek a practice and refresher environment.
What will be covered? As with all Portland Paddle events, this will be a fun, low intensity workshop that will include but not limited to topics such as:
Performing assisted capsize recovery
Solo capsize recovery featuring alternative methods for re-entry
Safety discussions on capsizes including hypothermia and equipment failure
Identifying major risks and hazards in coastal environment
Proper stroke technique for efficient and safe paddling
Paddling techniques for boat control and stability
Strategies for paddling in wind, waves, and currents
Safety items and kits for personal use
Things of interest in Casco Bay!
What is provided? All kayaking gear will be provided including kayak, paddle, PFD, spray skirt, wetsuit, and dry bag; or you can bring your own gear (kayaks must be at least 14ft and have bulkheads that provide flotation). Certified instructors
What do I need to bring? Warm synthetic top (can go in provided dry bag if you don’t own one); lunch, snacks, and water bottle; dry clothes to change into after the event.
What does it cost? $50 per person for MWGO members only.
