Advocacy

As an organization we are committed to protecting the habitat in which we guide, for our profession, for our clients, for the fish and game we pursue, and for future generations. Simply put, good wildlife habitat is good for guiding. The Maine Wilderness Guides Organization (MWGO) elevates the voice of guides and their allies to support sustainable management of the resources on which we depend.

To that end, every year, MWGO identifies legislative, administrative, and policy issues that impact the health of the land, waters, and wildlife which are so crucial to the guiding industry, and we advocate to protect those resources. The issues MWGO focuses on most include:

  • Healthy fisheries and wildlife populations clean
  • Free flowing rivers
  • Conserving quiet backcountry recreation areas
  • Guide training and licensing
  • The tradition and business of guiding, and
  • Maintaining public access to public and private lands for guides.

We engage with and monitor activities at the Maine State Legislature, Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Department of Marine Resources, Land Use Planning Commission, and other agencies about matters that are important to Maine Guides. To learn more about our current legislative priorities, please visit the Legislative Priorities page.
