Well deserved… Congratulations Kevin!Kevin Slater, a Master Maine Guide in Newry, was recently honored by MDIFW at the annual Maine Professional Guides Association banquet with the Wiggie Robinson Legendary Maine Guide Award.Slater is the 14th guide to be honored with the award, which is named after the late Wiggie Robinson, a longtime Katahdin area guide who was synonymous with the Maine outdoors. Kevin’s partner, Polly Mahoney, was the recipient of the award in 2021.Together, they co-founded and operate Mahoosuc Guide Service which offers dog sledding, canoeing, and fishing trips in New England and Canada, as well as guide training and courses in whitewater canoeing, paddle making, canoe building, dog sled construction and wilderness first aide.Numerous nominations referenced Kevin’s many accomplishments and dedicated mentorship throughout his guiding career which began in 1973. Highlights include his time as a guide in Denali National Park and the founding of Dirigo Mountain Rescue, and Dirigo Search and Rescue, upon his return to Maine. Kevin was involved in a number of technical rescues on Katahdin, including the 1984 avalanche.He also created the Outdoor Leader Program at the University of Maine, was the founding director of the Maine Outward Bound Program at the University of Maine in Orono, was one of the founders of the Maine Wilderness Guides Organization, was a Maine Guide oral board examiner, created the Junior Maine Guide Program through Newry Recreation, and taught students at the Bryant Pond Conservation School.Kevin has always been eager to share his skills with others, mentoring over 60 apprentices over the last 30 years, providing them with experience that can never be learned in a classroom.
